Science behind forming new habits

by The Pipon 29 April 2015in PipLife

As we all know new habits are hard to form. You may have the best intention of running every day before work and you do, for the first day or two.  After that you start to make excuses, you miss a few days, you’re tired the next day and soon months have gone by since you ran. The key way to ensure that you keep doing something you want to do is to make it a habit. But how do we do this?

The good news is that we all make habits all of the time. For the majority of our waking hours we work based on habits. Habits allow us to head straight for the shower in the morning before we realise our brains have properly woken up, they allow us to make breakfast and get out of the house at the same time each morning to get to work. Without habits we would have to plan each of these activities and monitor ourselves as we did them. The advantage of having habits is that while part of our brain is engaged in automatically completing the mundane morning tasks, the rest of our brain is free to think about other, more important, things such as the complex problem that faces us in work or what to have for lunch [1]. We don’t have to fight with ourselves to shower every morning because it is a habit. We do fight with ourselves if we want to leave the warm bed to go for a run because that is not yet, for most of us, a habit.  To make a habit we have to make the behaviour automatic.

The basal ganglia is the part of the brain that is involved in the formation of habits [2]. When we first learn a new task there is a section in the front part of our brains – called the pre-frontal cortex – which is activated. The pre-frontal cortex is the part of the brain involved when we have to make decisions and plan things or when we have to remember many things at once, as we do when first learning a new task. When a behaviour is repeated multiple times, however, it becomes automatic and we can see this change happening in the brain as well. When people are given a new task to complete their pre-frontal cortex works hard but when they have learned this task, and repeated it so many times that it has become automatic– or a habit – the activity switches to further back in the brain – to the basal ganglia [2].

In order to teach our brain to make this change the behaviour we want to make a habit of has to be repeated multiple times in the same context with the same cues. Our environment is filled with cues which tell us what to do when. When we get into bed we feel sleepy, when our alarm rings we get up, when we see the front door we take out our keys. Our brain likes cues and so if we want our brain to make a behaviour automatic we have to give it the same cues [3, 4]. This means that instead of saying ‘I’ll go for a run every day’ you should say ‘I’ll run every day as soon I get up’. If you do this enough times then your brain will learn to associate your alarm clock with running and you will automatically get up and run.

You can do the same with the PIP. If you say ‘I’ll use the Pip for 5 minutes every morning before my coffee’, you will automatically reach for the PIP when you see the jar of coffee in the morning. The time taken to form a habit is different for everyone but the good news is that every time you repeat the behaviour it becomes a little more automatic [4]. And even better, you don’t have to berate yourself if you miss just one day because a recent study found that, as long as you consistently do the behaviour on most  days, missing it for one day doesn’t make too much of a difference [4].

One final step

by Marie Clarkeon 30 May 2014in Kickstarter

One Final Step

For the past few months we’ve all been working to deliver your rewards by the end of this week. However we’ve been met with one (hopefully) final hurdle to clear. Earlier this week we received, what we hoped were, the final test plastic shells for your Pips. On inspection we discovered tiny scratches and air bubbles in a small number of the shells. We want to deliver to you a product that not only functions perfectly, but is also aesthetically beautiful and decided that this was not acceptable.

We’ve spent the past few days working very closely with the tool maker and manufacturer to pinpoint the issue. We have decided to re-mould all the shells to ensure this isn’t an on-going issue as we enter large scale manufacturing.

As a result of this issue, we’ve had to delay shipment. We will send you all a final shipping update next week. We are extremely grateful for support the Kickstarter community has shown us and we feel the most fitting way in showing that appreciation is in wanting to give you all a reward worthy of your time, effort and support.

Packaging
In our last update we showed the photos of the prototype packaging we approved for large scale printing. Last week we received batch these boxes.

Oddly enough we are delighted to announce that our packaging is already out of date. On Monday, Pip received it’s patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office!

CE certification & Patent
Also as of this week we can confirm Pip has received CE certification. CE is the European Electronics standard equivalent of the FCC Declaration of Conformity. Another win from your support!

We will be in touch

At some point next week we will post a final shipping timeline. We continue to appreciate and value your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

The Galvanic Team

Packaging boxes, User Guides and mHealth Summit

by Marie Clarkeon 13 May 2014in Kickstarter

Just a short update on the packaging and our presence at mHealth Summit with more info in the coming weeks!

Packaging and User Guide Finalized

All user guides are now printed and folded awaiting final package assembly. Along with this, we have finally given the green light for the packaging design. There was a minor delay caused by trying to match the measurements of the lid and bottom (can be seen in the photos of our earlier prototypes). This resulted in a redesign of the cutting forme and ultimately the delay for the arrival of the packaging itself. But don’t worry, this has not changed expected delivery times and we expect to receive the full quantity of boxes and inserts folded and assembled by the start of next week!

The photos below are the final packaging and user guides fully printed, cut and folded to be delivered to our backers. We’re absolutely delighted with the final result!

mHealth Summit Berlin

A number of members of the Galvanic team have recently returned from the first European mHealth conference held in Berlin (follow link for more: http://www.mhealthsummit.eu/). For those who don’t know what mHealth is, mHealth is an abbreviation for mobile health and refers to the practice of medicine and healthcare supported by mobile devices. The mHealth Summit Europe brings together global leaders in government, the private sector, industry, academia, providers and not-for-profit organizations from across the mHealth ecosystem. Here, the team demoed Pip and the latest version of it’s apps – The Loom and Relax & Race to the masses and was warmly received, resulting in a few blog mentions such as this one: http://www.tonykaneconsulting.com/thoughts-himss-europe/

Calling all backers with incomplete delivery surveys!

If you haven’t done so yet, please, please, please fill in the delivery surveys we sent out to you as we can’t deliver rewards to unfilled responses! (If you need to search your email inbox’s, the surveys were sent out on the 28th of August).

Thanks for reading and will be in touch with a further update in the coming weeks!

Tooling and Updated Schedule

by Scott Ingramon 30 April 2014in Kickstarter

Thank you for all of your patience to date. We have made huge strides since our last update, however despite Trojan work, further refinement of our plastics tooling means one final delay before delivery. We would prefer that this was not the case, however we are committed to getting a perfect product into your hands and we share any disappointment you have and will take any criticism on the chin. We promise that the wait will have been worth it.

This Update has details about our updated schedule, batteries, boards, application approval and other certifications.

Shipping Update

The further refinement of our plastics tooling has set us back by 4 weeks from our previously updated schedule. Updated shipping dates is now the 3rd week in May. All other parts: Batteries, Boards, Plates listed below have had their designs finalized, have been produced and are awaiting final assembly, testing and shipping.

Updated Schedule / ETA

The updated schedule looks like this.

End of April / Beginning of May: Tooling completed and production of plastics for the body of Pip.

May – End of Week 1 – Week 3: Final assembly and quality control.

May – Week 3: Shipping of rewards.

Batteries
The batteries arrived from the factory at the start of April and were delivered to our final step manufacturer in less than 24 hours and now await assembly. All relevant testing was undertaken by our manufacturer and the final U.S. certification, UL 2054, is well underway. Below are photos of the unpacking of one of the units.

Boards
1st production of panels were received from our manufacturer and were tested to verify that everything is perfect. As expected, they have passed inspection and are also awaiting assembly.

Sensor Discs
In our last update we had given the green light on the mass production of the sensor discs, this involved a number of complicated steps to forming and plating the sensor discs on a large scale. All our time and effort of fine tuning and refining the production process has finally paid off, with the sensor discs having optimum reading sensitivity.

[caption id="attachment_2990" align="alignnone" width="700"]Sensor disks used in PiP Sensor disks used in Pip[/caption]

Application submission to Appstore
All applications submitted to Apple’s Appstore must undergo a process of review. The 3 applications Relax & Race, The Loom, and Lie Detective are currently in different levels of submission and review and a breakdown of the submissions are as follows:

Relax & Race - Currently under review.

The Loom - Currently undergoing final tests before submission for review.

Lie Detective - Reviewed and approved.

The process of uploading the applications to Google Play is much less time consuming and will be submitted shortly.

Bluetooth Approval

In our last update we talked to you about Pip undergoing testing to pass all relevant regulations. The Pip has been certified by the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) granted full Bluetooth qualification. Pip’s applications to the FCC and IC are currently being examined by them and we expect to receive certification of in the next 2 weeks. We have engaged third party experts to help us through all certification processes.

Thank You

We must again express our thanks to all of you for your continued patience and support. Please be assured that we are working very hard to get the Pip into your hands as soon as possible.

As always, please feel free to contact us here on Kickstarter with any questions you may have.

Yours in Pip,

The Galvanic Team

by Marie Clarkeon 3 July 2013in Kickstarter

Firstly, we’d like to wish all our American backers and friends a very happy (and slightly early) 4th of July. We’ve passed the 40% mark in the last few days which makes us really happy but we want to keep the momentum up so be sure to tell all your friends and relatives about us.

We have some great news for all you quantified selfers out there. From day one, all the games are going to include the ability to record your activity as well as monitor and chart your performance over time. Over time you’ll also be able to export your performance data and share key performance indicators with your social networks.

We will also be creating a standalone quantified self app for real-time monitoring of your stress levels. The app will allow you to record and review key performance statistics and charts. This app will be free of charge to everyone.

Cornell Testing Moodlight

by Marie Clarkeon 28 June 2013in Kickstarter, Uncategorized

Hi Everyone,

Hope you’re all having a good Friday! Just a quick update before the weekend. We have some news from Mark Matthews of the Interaction Design Lab at Cornell University. You might remember from the video Mark and his team are currently doing some exciting work using the Pip on Moodlight, the light that knows how you feel.

More from Mark Matthews…

“We are kicking off our MoodLight study today at the Interaction Design Lab at Cornell. Phase 1 will involve testing with 30 Cornell students. All going well, we will follow up in the Fall semester by testing the system clinically as a relaxation aid.

Our primary goal is to investigate whether MoodLight, an ambient lighting relaxation system can:

1) provide more immediate and affective feedback to help people relax,
2) does it help people share how they are feeling with loved ones.”

We wish them all the best in their studies and hope they get some interesting results.

Thanks,

from all the Galvanic Team

Pip launches on crowdfunding website Kickstarter

by Scott Ingramon 19 June 2013in Kickstarter

kickstarter-logo-light

We’re excited to announce that we’ve launched The Pip on Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a crowdfunding website which offers individuals a way to fund innovative projects. Since it’s launch in 2009, 6.4 million people have pledged $1 billion, funding creative projects on Kickstarter.

The Plan

A successful Kickstarter campaign will help us finalise our manufacturing arrangements, get our apps ready for release and deliver the Pip to your doorstep. With the support of the Kickstarter Community, we can make stress history!

So far, we have designed and manufactured a limited number of prototype Pips which we have used to develop, test and demonstrate our games. We have recently completed a hardware revision to update our Bluetooth technology and accommodate a smaller micro USB connector for charging. We finally have all the pieces in-place to move to full scale manufacturing. We have engaged a world leading manufacturing partner capable of meeting our Kickstarter demand and far beyond.

Our plan from now is to gear up for mass production by year end 2013.

DFM completion
Tooling for plastics and sensors
Packaging design and prototyping
Production test and QA implementation
Refinement of release titles to gold master
Pre-production test build
Mass production

Kickstarter rewards
As part of the Kickstarter campaign we are offering a choice of 9 different pledge levels, including limited edition Pips.

Find out how you can pledge money and join the Pip community here.
